Compliance: Required within the next 50 hours time-in-service after the effective date of this AD, unless already accomplished. To prevent loss of airflow to the carburetor and possible loss of engine power, which could result in loss of control of the airplane, accomplish the following: (a) Remove the carburetor air intake box and replace it with a new carburetor air intake box, part number 35453. Reinstall the same bolts and safety wire. Ensure that there is at least a 0.25-inch clearance between the actuating arm and the side of the air intake scoop and that the box and intake screen fit properly at the forward end of the scoop. NOTE: Carburetor air intake boxes, part number 35453, are available free of charge on an exchange basis from the manufacturer at the address specified in paragraph (d) of this AD. (b) Special flight permits may be issued in accordance with FAR 21.197 and 21.199 to operate the airplane to a location where the requirements of this AD can be accomplished. (c) An alternative method of compliance or adjustment of the compliance time that provides an equivalent level of safety may be approved by the Manager, Denver Aircraft Certification Field Office, FAA, 2390 Syracuse Street, Denver, Colorado 80207. The request should be forwarded through an appropriate FAA Maintenance Inspector, who may add comments and then send it to the Manager, Denver Aircraft Certification Field Office. (d) All persons affected by this directive may obtain a new carburetor air intake box, part number 35453, on an exchange basis by contacting Aviat, Inc., P.O. Box 1149, Afton, Wyoming 83110; Telephone (307) 886-3151. Information that is related to this AD may be examined at the FAA, Central Region, Office of the Assistant Chief Counsel, Room 1558, 601 E. 12th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64106.
